Snowflake Challenge, Day 9, 10
Jan. 14th, 2014 03:43 pmDay 9
In your own space, rec at least 3 fanworks you thought you wouldn't like (because they weren't your fandom or they pushed against your boundaries or you thought you just wouldn't be interested) but you ended up loving. Leave a comment in this post saying you did it. Include a link to your post if you feel comfortable doing so.
Queen of Spades by astolat (Bond/Female M, explicit)
I never, ever would read this pairing, but I like Astolat's work, so out of curiosity, I checked it out. I was completely sold by this - about her being the one woman that Bond's usual tricks didn't work on, and her background before she worked her way up the ranks and how. M is written brilliantly, and what I thought was an impossible pairing really worked.
Off the Record by goddamnhella (Loki/Tony Stark, mature)
I didn't touch Loki/Tony before this fic, it just wasn't a pairing I was drawn to at all. There is a reason that this fic is one of the most popular Avenger fics on AO3: 1197 comments, 6420 kudos, 2043 bookmarks and 206,111 hits. It's because goddamnhella can tell one hell of a story, with a intriguing plot, great characterization and connections with characters you can believe in. It's just really well done.
Eidolon by Llanval (Thor/Loki, Odin/Frigga, mature)
The fic started with a prompt: an arranged marriage between two princes, and Laufrey loving his son, Loki. Sounds simple, but oh my god, the world building here is incredible. The exploration of the different cultures, but really focusing in on Jotunheim and the snow giants... It's an epic story, with drama, politics, Issues, magic, love. I'm not even doing this fic justice - the world building is some of the best I've seen in fandom. I downloaded it from AO3 and put it on my Kindle and just was completely sucked in until I'd finished what was posted. It was out of my comfort zone because of the gender issues (Snow giants are - I'm not totally clear on what is the right word, I'm not sure intersexual is the right one. Basically, their anatomy is different from the Asgardians.) Mpreg doesn't cover the nuances of it. It's not like 'human male having a baby that has to be cut out of his stomach'. So, while it was a stretch for me, I bought it. Unfortunately, it is also WIP and it is unknown if/when it will ever be finished. But the fic is amazing enough I do recommend read what's there.
Scholar and Soldier by Adlanth (Erestor/Caranthir, Mature)
When I saw this pairing, my eyebrows went through the roof and I couldn't imagine it. I'm so glad I checked this out. Her Caranthir is really well fleshed, her Erestor has meat to him and her OCs are delightful. It turned out to be a very plausible way to bring two unlikely characters.
Encore (They Both Reached for the Gun Coda) by voodoochild (Velma/Roxie, author rates it as Teen but it really is Mature at least)
I'll quote the fic summary because it's quite good: Velma has a signature - all her partners die. She seems to be forgetting that Roxie's got a signature of her own. Never thought of reading Chicago femslash, but I stumbled upon this fic in my AO3 wanderings and this is PERFECT.
I've Suffered Shipwrecks by paperclipbitch (Clint Barton/Loki, Steve Rogers/Thor, Clint Barton/Natasha Romanov, Bruce Banner/Natasha Romanov, Jane Foster/Darcy Lewis, Mature)
I am not a Clint/Loki fan, but Kei said 'READ THIS' and I'm glad I did. This story is so off the wall, but utter magic at the same time. It just sucks you in.
Day 10
In your own space, create a list of at least three fannish things you'd love to receive, something you've wanted but were afraid to ask for - a fannish wish-list of sorts. Leave a comment in this post saying you did it. Include a link to your wish-list if you feel comfortable doing so. Maybe someone will grant a wish. Check out other people's posts. Maybe you will grant a wish. If any wishes are granted, we'd love it if you link them to this post.
I don't know if this is exactly what they intended, but these were what came to mind.

I don't know if this is exactly what they intended, but these were what came to mind.
- Feedback - tell me what you think of my work if you read it, even just a 'this was nice' is wonderful to me. I've had incidences of people telling other people they liked my stories and then it trickles back to me. I always wonder why they didn't tell me personally. If you like something I did, please tell me. It's a valued gift.
- Fanmixes - I've seen more of these around fandom these days, and I think they are awesome, so if someone would want to make a fanmix of any of my work or for a specific pairing I write, that'd be pretty cool.
- Slashy Swap promotion - if you like participating in the Slashy Swaps and enjoy spreading the word, please consider promoting the summer or winter swap next time it comes through. Word of mouth recommendations are invaluable.
- I would also never turn down fanart, lol.
