For [livejournal.com profile] minual_nuwing

Haldir groans, eyes ache from the low candlelight. Crumpled papers sit as proof of his incompetence. The messenger is leaving tomorrow - no other chance to send anything for months.

He reaches to grasp a nearby paper, glancing over it. He admires Elladan’s confident skill in correspondence, each containing news, adventures, and thoughts.

With each letter received, Hal finds himself caught up. He recognizes it with something akin to horror. It’s an impossible situation, more so than their unlikely friendship - something with a possibility to damage. He writes now, no hint of his struggle. He will get this right.

~*~*~

He is pulled aside by an elf he does not know. As soon as the letter is placed in his hands, he knows the writer. He leaves as soon as possible, preferring to read in quiet and privacy - nether are present.

Now in his rooms, he smoothes out the paper. There are several pages written in a steady hand, and he settles down, next to the light. He reads quickly. Later he will go back and read through it again slowly, looking for an elusive meaning, looking for hope, as with other letters, but Elladan will not find them.

**sniffle** This is lovely, Red, and so melancholy. It left me feeling a little forlorn - and hoping that Elladan will jump on his horse and rush to Lorien to find out exactly what is up. **grin**

A beautiful, poignant little thing, and I enjoyed it immensely. Thank you!

**hugs**

There's one bit in my Hal/Elladan fic - about them learning to be friends through letters. This was a little bit of a back story there. It takes them a long time, but - eventually...

I'm glad you enjoyed it, Queen of Drabbles. *grins*

*hugs you*

Poor Elladan. He hopes, but finds no reward. So sad.

Lovely!

Well - both are in the same boat, really. There is a happy end for them in the future though.

This moved me as much as anything I have read in fan fiction. That last phrase is so simple and powerful. I went and reread the beginning and it such impact after knowing the end.

Amazing.

Lord - thank you, Erfan. I'm quite fond of these two, and it's incredible it touched you that much. Drabble writing is difficult. :P

Thank you, Lily. I enjoyed writing this, and am working on yours next. You really need to write more too, by the way, *pokes* I loved your drabbles.

Cute icon!

*hugs* Thank you, Binky dear. I'm quite fond of that last line myself. They do have their happy ending in time though.

I love the way you approached this, showing both sides of their story and giving us a wonderful look back at their past. I think after starting a relationship in this manner, they would feel stronger and more secure about their later separation. Very nicely done!

The showing both sides of their story? Utter accident, done last minute. Really, really happy it worked. I do think they can survive quite a bit, they had known each other for a long time before they finally were together, and spent most of the time separated. There's a real strength there.

Pleased as punch you enjoyed it, sweetie. love, me
